PROJECT DETAILS

Across the border of New Mexico and Colorado lies one the most beautiful passes in the country known as the Raton Pass on I-25. For this project 5 cuts were to be abated to reduce rockfall and increase catch basin widths. An orthogonally jointed and bedded limestone was encountered which proved to be quite inconsistent. 25 blasts were conducted using precision controlled presplit, presplit, trim/cushion, and angled production blasting to remove the material from the cuts. The project was slow and methodical and took nearly 9 months to complete due to weather, highway closure scheduling, and pioneering into working areas. Strayos 3D photogrammetry proved instrumental in this project which promoted proper blast design to limit flyrock. With less than 60 feet of roadway, blasting cuts 100 feet in the air would have been nearly impossible without using the aid of technology.
