PROJECT DETAILS
The authorities in Medicine Park, contracted for the expansion of their current water treatment facility. This project called for rock excavation in order to build the new plant expansion. The rock had to be removed up next to and against the existing treatment plant. The main water input line that fed the entire treatment operation was within a few feet of the final limits of rock excavation. The existing treatment plant furnishes water to the city of Lawton, Oklahoma, Fort Sill Military Base, and several surrounding communities located nearby. Damaging this line would have shut down the entire water source for the entire area.
Van Horn Construction out of Fort Smith, Arkansas was awarded the contract and elected to drill and blast the rock. Dykon was hired to perform the drilling and blasting of this sensitive project. Drilling and Blasting began on January 2, 2002 and was completed successfully by January 23, 2002. The rock excavation for this project was safely blasted in three weeks. Total rock excavation for this project that required blasting was 23,685 cubic yards. 21, 140 pounds of explosive was used to perform this work. The project was completed with no interruption to the water supply service.
