PROJECT DETAILS
GAP Roofing, Inc., is a manufacturer of asphalt saturated organic felt roll roofing underlayment products. The family owned company was established in 1990 in a large rural industrial park in Pryor, Oklahoma. Since then, GAP Roofing’s expansion has continued at a steady pace with new manufacturing plants in McGregor, Texas, Shafter, California and Jasper Florida.
The Pryor, Oklahoma Plant is being expanded and needs an additional pulper unit to keep up with the increased production demands. The pulper turns recycled cardboard into a slurry solution which eventually ends up as one of the products manufactured at that plant.
The new pulper unit was designed to be constructed in an area of the plant that had rock excavation in it. The pit which would contain the new pulper unit was within 17′ of existing construction. The pit needed to be 18′ deep with 9 feet in solid rock.
The cost of hoe-ramming along with the time constraints made it necessary to investigate the possibility of blasting the rock as a means of removing it. The close proximity of the existing building made it necessary to select a blasting contractor with a successful reputation for this kind of precision work. Dykon Blasting Corp was sent an invitation to provide a proposal for the blasting portion of this project and was ultimately selected as the blasting contractor based on past history and credibility.
Time was a critical element for this project and after being selected, Dykon Blasting moved in and began drilling the very same day. An emergency blasting plan was filed with the state of Oklahoma and the first blast for the project was detonated the second day. Two more blasts finished Dykon’s part of the project and the site was turned over to the excavating contractor who assisted in the preparation and cover of the blasts.
