Gransolar Group, an international green energy developer with offices in Irving, Texas, in contract with LPL Solar LLC, is building a solar electricity generation facility near Thorndale, Texas. The soil on this project was extremely tough, and conventional drive times for the piles were such that the production schedule could not be met. The piles had to be predrilled to a depth, allowing efficient drive times while maintaining enough skin friction to prevent subsidence or uplift.
Conventional, off-the-shelf drill bits could not meet the production requirements, so Dykon engineered and produced drill bits onsite to handle the difficult material and drill laser-straight holes. A total of 16,381 holes were drilled in 51 days, 2 weeks of which were spent testing to determine the exact hole size and depth required to ensure the piles were secure and would never sink over time. The drilling for the entire project was completed safely and ahead of schedule.
